Book Review: The Distant Hours

Kate Morton is an amazing writer. She is Australian based and is really talented in character development and intricate storytelling. The Distant Hours focuses on three sisters, the Blythe sisters: Percy, Saffy and Juniper and the trials and tribulations of their lives together as owners and dwellers of Milderhurst castle. When Edie Burchill happens into their lives, on a search of her mother Meredith’s past, the truth of all their mistakes and past family secrets are revealed.

In this novel, we learn about Raymond Blythe, an author and how his tale The True Story of the Mud Man serves as the baseline for the Blythe family. At some point, everyone in the family is impacted by this story. The sisters, bound together by their love for their family castle and by their odd father’s familial devotion that ties the sisters together for the rest of their lives. It’s a very interesting story that dives into intricacies of family relationships and a past that haunts a lifetime.
