I’m Back from LA!

Hello everyone! Did you miss me? I was away in beautiful and sunny LA for a 4 day work conference. The first two days we were there we were blessed with above normal temps in the 80s. I was a very happy girl. On Sunday, I woke up early and went for a run on the treadmills at the hotel gym and then walked to a coffee shop and grabbed and ice coffee and enjoyed the walk back to the hotel. I can definitely tell you that I LOVED that – it was a nice break since we recently were dumped on with snow in Chicago. There’s just something special about sun, palm trees and warm weather that make a girl all happy inside!

We stayed in downtown Los Angeles and had some really good eats – which I’ll post about next week, and I met a lot of great people.  The conference was at the LA Convention Center which is right by the Staples Center and L.A. Live! Which is a really happening area!

We had a tiny panic on our way back from LA when we learned that a snow storm was hitting Chicago on the day we were to come back. Luckily, I was able to switch to a red eye back to Chicago which landed me in Chicago a few hours before the storm hit the city. Whew! All other flights on our way back were canceled and even though it would have been very nice to be stranded in California for an extra day or two – I really wanted to get back home. Coincidentally  on our way into LA, I learned that Halle Berry was on our flight. Which makes sense because after we boarded there was a weird announcement that said, “Hey, this is Haley and I’m helping the pilot get ready for our flight.” Being in the back of the plane I didn’t really think anything about it except that some weirdo named Haley was on the intercom. Come to find out that it was Halle who boarded our plane last with two people from her entourage. Who knew!?

In a New York State of Mind

Two weekends ago I headed to the Big Apple for a work-related conference and was able to spend my first time EVER in NYC, staying right in the midst of it all in Times Square. Not sure what I was expecting but I think that NYC definitely lives up to all of it’s hype. The bright lights, the big city (and I’m from Chicago!), food vendors, culture and diversity, and tons of places to really get lost in if you wanted to!

Our first day in NY, we spent having lunch in Times Square and were able to walk around on 7th Avenue and take in all of the excitement from tourists and New Yorkers alike. There were people dressed up as cartoon characters, tons and tons of NYPD (literally on every half-block), street performers, and we even spotted Nick Cannon doing a promo for a new TV show he has coming up on Nickelodeon!

That night, we went walking up and down Times Square, where the lights turned even brighter, the crows turned much larger and tons of shopping happened (not by me, of course).  Did you know the stores are opened til midnight there?! What! We didn’t have any food from street vendors, but BOY do New Yorkers love their bagels, gyros and hot dogs from food stands! They were everywhere and flooded the streets with the comforting scents of yummy food.  We spent our first night waiting for hours at a steakhouse in Harlem – you’ve already read that food review.

On our second day in the Big Apple, we did some more adventuring out in Times Square and vowed to not eat somewhere that had an hour long wait. We did have someone with us with special eating needs, so that kinda stunk because we couldn’t stray too much into really experiencing different cultures of food. On our second night, we hit up a place called Bourbon Street in Greenwich Village which I’ll post a review on next week.

Finally, our “free”/travel Monday we were able to explore the city a little more. We arranged to have tickets for the 9/11 Memorial (it’s free but you have to pre-order online and reserve a time). There was a bunch of security to even get into the Memorial (think airport security) and it was just mind-blowing to be in this place that brought America to it’s knees 11 years prior. Who doesn’t remember where they were on 9/11? I do, and it’s heartbreaking to be in a place where 2,900+ Americans lost their lives in tumbling buildings. The memorial is beautiful, though. The entire space is tree-lined and when those trees bloom with leaves, I’m sure it will be breathtaking. There are two giant pools in the place where the twin towers once stood.  According to the 9/11 Memorial website, the pools are nearly an acre in size and “feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America.”  The waterfalls rush down the insides of the pools and flow freely into a center square which is like an abyss. You cannot see the bottom of the square. All the names of those lost on 9/11 at the twin towers, pentagon, flights and 1993 bombings are inscribed on the outside of the pools and are organized by where they were on that tragic day.  The names are cut-outs so you can look through the names into the waterfall, and they also allow you to touch the names along the pool.  At night, it’s said that the park is lit up – light illuminates the names and alongside the pools. Pretty intense.

It’s really solemn in the memorial, which is how it’s meant to be. A time to reflect on that horrible day and the innocent lives lost. It tugs really hard on your heart strings when you find a woman’s name along with “and her unborn child.”  It makes you think about what kind of hatred is out there in the world to possess someone to do this to others.

After some time spent at the memorial, my co-worker and I decided to visit the Century 21 building across the street for some rejuvenation. Holy moly is that building huge! It’s like a 6-story TJ Maxx and a must visit for those die-hard shoppers visiting NYC. After the shopping adventure, we wandered a bit in the Financial District, waiting for our third co-worker to join us for lunch and stumbled upon St. Paul’s Chapel, where we found a graveyard dating back to the 1700′s, and a place of remembrance for those lost in 9/11.  The pews in the chapel once served as refuge for those civil service works cleaning up after 9/11, there’s memorials erected inside for everyone affected by the attacks. It’s a really special place to visit, if you have the chance.

I only spent 3 days in NY and not sure if it’s on my “must-go-back” list, but it was amazing to experience and actually see what it’s all about. I’m also very happy that I was able to visit the 9/11 site and experience some part of that tragic time in America. Hopefully if I do ever go back, I’ll time to see Lady Liberty (which was closed due to damage from Hurricane Sandy), and all of the other burroughs that dot that massive city!

California Love: San Diego Part 1

San Diego will be split up into 2 parts because … we did a lot of stuff here.

Saturday kicked off our adventure with breakfast in La Jolla, CA at The Cottage (more on this place in a different post).  We headed to breakfast pretty early and we were greeted with warm, bright sun and a sleepy little coastal town with adorable shops and cute breakfast nooks. We chose The Cottage off of a recommendation that JP’s friend provided and it did not let us down. We had a short wait and were able to sit outside under umbrellas, as the morning crowd waited just outside on the sidewalk.

After breakfast, we tried to find the shopping area of La Jolla and after some handy-dandy mapping, we figured out the general area and headed towards the beach! There we found soooo many shops and cute boutiques, including larger stores such as Lucky Brand and Gap, and were able to just enjoy the morning sun. We then headed towards the water, as we were trying to get a sneak peak and were completely blown away at the views of the Cove area of La Jolla. Tucked neatly behind the main row of shops is a completely breathtaking area of amazing views, coastal animals and a park … all serving as the backdrop to the beautiful Pacific Ocean. I snapped lots of pictures of the sea lions and pelicans all bathing in the sun, of the gorgeous hills across the bay and of the palm trees the dotted the coast.

After La Jolla, we headed to the main portion of our Saturday – Seaworld! This was my first time at Seaworld and it was super neat. The weather was amazing and super warm … we all got some form of sun-kissing – ok, more of a sunburn but it was ok! We saw three different shows; killer whales, a super cheesy dolphin show and a hilarious sea lion and sea otter show at the end. We also were able to check out feeding time at the penguin habitat and even went to the Shark Encounter exhibit which was awesome because you were able to walk under the shark tank through a tube as they swam all around you…creepy cool! Our celebrity sighting? Flava Flav at Seaworld who was just as a hot of a mess in person that he is on TV.

After a day at Seaworld, we headed out to Barona Indian Reservation as they have a casino on site. I’m going to go ahead and say it was the most terrifying car ride I’ve ever had, and I was the driver! The reservation was tucked up in the hills of San Diego where signs such as “Watch for falling rocks,” and “Dust Clouds Possible” cautioned the drivers on an already super winding road. Through the pitch black sky and on a road that had a speed limit of 50 mphs, we finally made it to a gorgeous casino and resort where I lost $60 but had a good time playing some slots. I did win $50 and then $30 but then in true gambler fashion, spent it right back in the casino and lost it all.

It was a super fun day! Stay tuned for the last of the San Diego trip comin up in my next Cali post!

Ke$ha + LMFAO

I am not 13 years old. But I will now be the first person to admit that you must be 13 years old to appreciate all that is Ke$ha. My friend Courtney and I scored free tickets to the LMFAO/Ke$ha concert this past week. LMFAO was actually awesome…their energy is ridiculous. They played all their best hits and had some hilarious, awesome dance moves. They were a great opening act and I honestly kinda wished they were the headlining act.

Then. Ke$ha came on. So her music is raunchy and she has a ton of party hits … but I always thought she was trashy or “sleazy” as she likes to say. I guess I never realized the trashiness until I saw it in person. First of all, her audience members seriously had an average age of 13 years old and a lot of little girls were consistently being plucked out of the concert for under age drinking. Secondly, if girls weren’t there on their own, they had parental chaperones. I can honestly say that Ke$ha would not be a concert that I would take my young daughter to. She’s not about girl power and fun. She’s about drinking, getting trashed, and disrespecting your own body as a female to conquer males. Not cute.

I would want my daughter to have someone to look up to. Not someone that chugs Budweiser on stage and then spits it out, that talks about sleeping with guys and partying all night long … that’s just something that didn’t sit well with me. I understand that Ke$ha hasn’t faked her persona at all. People know what they’re signing up for when they see her. They expect her to be like this. But at some point during her tour, doesn’t she realize that most of the faces staring back up at her are too young to party? That the message she is sending these girls is that it’s ok to be trashy and disrespect yourself and others? I don’t know … didn’t really sit well with me. Plus, I’m pretty sure she was lip-syncing the entire time and my friend and I couldn’t even make it through three songs. Apparently, we’re definitely no longer 13!
