Re-Store Visit

JP and I ventured out to our local Habitat for Humanity ReStore shop a few weeks ago in search of some items we can use to decorate for our wedding. I’ve heard about ReStore from John + Sherry over at Young House Love  as they have purchased items from here before and refurbed them for renovation projects around their house. A ReStore is basically like a thrift shop for home-related items (think: doors, windows, sinks, potties, etc.) and all the proceeds go back to HFH’s efforts to build sustainable housing for those in need.

We were stoked to find out that a location was a mere few miles from our home and decided to scope them out to see what goods they had on hand. When you walk in, it kind of like a mini-Home Depot. Stark cement floors, items grouped by function, employees in aprons. We ventured over to the section that housed used doors because we want to use that for our ceremony and saw a plethora of doors to choose from! It would be a great place for someone looking to revamp a door for their house! They had wood-filled (think: HEAVY) doors, but we had the non-filled doors in mind for our use. Much lighter! And score! We found a matching pair for $10 a pop! WHAT! So excited!

They also had tons of other items including cabinets and cabinet doors, various handles, light bulbs, old appliances, etc. Most of their items were a steal of a deal and if you just put a little love into them, they would clean up quite nicely!

Have you ever been to a ReStore? What’s your favorite place to score great deals?

Holiday Re-Cap

Well Christmas is officially over and not going to lie – I feel like I need a vacation from my vacation.  JP and I enjoyed 5 wonderful days with lots of family in three different states (count it – Ohio, Illinois and Indiana) and delivered tons of presents (and received tons back).  Thursday night we headed out to central Ohio to spend the weekend with her family. The 6 hour drive wasn’t bad except for the last 20 minutes when it was very icy and slick…but we made it safe and sound. It was also Ella’s first time on such a long road trip and although she was a little bit of a worry wart on the car ride – she did fine, except for annoying her big brother by trying to snuggle the entire car ride.

While in Ohio we hit up a winery and picked up our table wine (hello 7 cases) for our wedding. It was fun to get a chance to taste all the different offerings at Mon Amie Winery – delicious! We even were able to add an additional signature drink for our big day from an amazing concoction they had! We also picked up all the paper needed to DIY our invitations – I’m super excited to see how those turn out – as well as scored some pretty unique glassware for decorations. I’m a bit excited to see how things are pulling together – especially since we have a little over 6 months until the finish line.

During our time in Ohio, we had a fun Saturday night opening gifts with JP’s parents and sister, and we made out more than alright. I’m so thankful to be able to join such a loving and fun family! I received ZUMBA for Wii and I’m super excited to try that out and dance my way around our living room. I also got some awesome hats (I’m a winter hat freak), an adorable picture frame that JP’s sister made, with a tutorial here, a nice winter coat and some other super fun stuff!

We also enjoyed some QT with JP’s grandma out in the country. It was fun to see her and her crazy dog Sandi – who thoroughly enjoyed her stuffed pig we got her for Christmas! But our 4 days in Ohio flew right on by and before we knew it, we were headed out the door in some icy weather back to Chicago to be able to make it to the other 2 family Christmas’ we had scheduled – my dad and my mom’s respective sides.

On Christmas day we stopped by my dad’s in the early afternoon to have dinner with him, my uncle and my grandma and to wrap presents. It was cool to spend some time with them, as they are always a barrel of laughs – especially my dad. Then we headed out to NW Indiana to join the chaos of my mother’s side of the family. My mom is 1 of 10 children – so we have a pretty huge showing at Christmas filled with a big tree and tons of presents. Plus my nephew is 3 years old now so Christmas is awesome because we get to shower him with gifts and see how excited he gets over everything!

My mom got JP and I a deep fryer – which is awesome for this diet I am supposed to be on for the wedding (supposed is a great word). We also got a board/bags set from my aunt and uncle! AMAZING! Overall we didn’t do too bad – but now I’m ready for a vacation from our vacation. Anyone else pooped from the holiday?

(There are basically two generations of cousins – the older ones that we refer to ourselves as the “envelopes” because we don’t really receive wrapped gifts anymore and are more apt to get envelopes. The young group which starts around the age of 14 are the “present” group because they still get lots of actual gifts! There’s a fine line of seniority here, people!)

Crazy Crafts

While spending my life “Pinning” away, I’ve stumbled upon some really crazy crafty ideas that I just thought I’d share with you.

  • Color swatches on dressers

Pinterest How-To’s

Let’s keep the Pinterest theme going, eh? Another thing I love about Pinterest is all of the helpful “How-To’s” that are posted. Seriously! There are great ideas for almost anything! Here are some of my fave’s!

1. Did you know that putting a wooden spoon over a pot of boiling water will prevent it from spilling over? I didn’t. Now I use wooden spoons all the time!

2. Did you know that to clean those grimy headlights all you need is toothpaste?

3. Did you know that you do not need helium to blow up balloons for a decorate centerpiece? Just use a tube up the center and secure them!

4. Scrapped for time? Freeze some herbs with olive oil and toss in a cooking pan when needed!

5. Have a ton of guests for that summer party and no one to man the grill? Toss a bunch of the hot dogs into a slow cooking, upright, and cook on low for 4 hours!

6. Need to remove furniture indents? Lay some ice cubs on the dents and let them melt then gently lift the carpet upright.

7. Look for that extra sparkle on your Christmas tree this winter? Glue 2 mini mirrors back to back and insert a silver metallic cord for hanging. Fill the insides of the tree after putting the lights on and the mirrors will give the tree an extra sparkle with the added reflection of the light!

8. A cheap and easy way to add extra lighting to your backyard is add solar lights to your fence, which will absorb the sun in the day and stream a warm glow for your backyard party at night.

9. Afraid your guests for your upcoming wedding will forget to include their name? Draw their name or initials in black light pen on the invite so if they forget, you’ll know who they are when the RSVP is returned! Genius!

10. Sick of dragging around a trash can or being surrounded by millions of used tissues? Rubberband an empty tissue box to a new one and you have an instant trash receptacle for your used tissues!
