KC Masterpiece – Trip Re-cap

I ventured to Kansas City again this year for a conference my team attends annually.  This year we were in town for even a shorter period of time – about 36 hours, but were able to get some good eats in, and see a bit of the Power and Light district, since that’s where we usually stay by. I blogged a bit about my trip last year – where we saw some neat architecture, buildings, and ate at some delicious restaurants. This year wasn’t much different!

The Power and Light district in KC is so cute…although the downtown area is a bit creepy mainly because compared to Chicago there are NO people out and about. Tons of tall buildings scatter the downtown area and mysteriously around 5 pm there is rush hour traffic – but during the day it’s a bit of a ghost town. The P&L district has lit up trees and signs all over and is home to quite a few dining options and KC Live! which is an outdoor music venue.

The weather was nice – about high 60s the entire time we were there so we were able to walk around and even dine outside for lunch and dinner a few times. It’s nice to enjoy the sunshine since the months are getting warmer! I have a few food reviews coming up – but because our trip was pretty short, we weren’t able to do any other sight-seeing!

After flying at sunset and sunrise, I totally get why pilots want to be pilots. There’s a bit of mystery as you rise above the clouds on a muggy day and are greeted by warm sunshine and a ground of white fluffy pillows. So beautiful and wonderous!

Eat Kansas City: Bristol Seafood Grill

During my work trip last week to Kansas City, my team stopped by the Bristol Seafood Grill for a nice, relaxing, semi-upscale dinner. As the avid deal grabber, not-ashamed coupon clipper, I scored a Foursquare check in deal for a free appetizer and we also had a free appetizer from the hotel concierge who recommended the restaurant to us! Sweet!

The meal kicked off of with hot-out-of-the-oven cheese biscuits served with a honey butter…it was seriously to-die-for.

The Bristol had some great selections on appetizers such as tempura shrimp sushi rolls, lobster tamale, and New England lobster rolls. In the end, we settled on the calamari and the smoked salmon flatbread. I believe that flatbread was epic. The salmon was thinly sliced and it was roasted deliciously. It also had some capers on it with a garlic white sauce. Yum!

Yummy appetizers from Bristol Seafood Grill.

Best part of those appys? Free. They were both stinking free. For my entree I settled on the day’s fresh fish selection and chose the Atlantic Salmon with a side of grilled asparagus and Parmesan roasted yukon gold potatoes. The meal was sized just right after diving snacking on those awesome appetizers. Everything was seasoned nicely and even the fish was prepared well.

Overall the meal was delicious and was probably the best meal I ate the entire time.  They fly their fish out daily, so even though you are plopped right in the middle of the US, you can enjoy an amazing fresh fish dinner with no worries. I’d definitely recommend eating here if you ever stop in KC and you’re over the whole BBQ…but really, who’s ever over BBQ?!

Kansas City Baby!

Last week I hit up Kansas City for a work function and it was great to be out and about in a city I haven’t been to. We stayed in the Power and Light district and it had a funky little vibe into it that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the beautiful architecture, the food, and some sights around town. My event was at the Kansas City Convention Center and our hotel was right by. Being on the 16th floor allowed for some pretty cool views of the town. That odd shaped building? A performing arts center. I was amazed and it was huge.

PicMonkey now has collages available. LOVE!

At night, the Power and Light district turns into a beautifully lit up place with blue lights in all of the trees, bright P&L posts, and even a swirly ball at the end of a street in the district. It’s lively and full of people with some pretty great restaurants (a few that we even tried) and apparently there is a really cool AMC movie theater as well as a small outdoor concert area.

My awful iPhone attempt to capture the bright ball at the end of the street!

Next up! A snap shot at all the good eating I did around town!
